On the rĂŽle of the carotenoids in photosynthesis in Rhodospirillum rubrum

    Get PDF
The photosynthetic action spectrum of Rhodospirillum vubrum Esmarck strain 4 was determined. Some carotenoids were found capable of absorbing photosynthetically active light. Apparently, however, the main carotenoid, spirilloxanthin, does not participate in photosynthesis. Maxima and minima of the action spectra of photosynthesis and of phototaxis were found to coincide. Thus the correctness of Manten's hypothesis concerning a direct connection betweenboth processes is strongly supported. The carotenoid action seemed to be less pronounced in phototaxis than it is in photosynthesis. In the discussion a hypothetical explanation of this phenomenon has been given

Propertius 3.3’s Summary of Ennius’s Annales

    Get PDF
In 3.3, Propertius summarizes the third triad of Ennius’s Annales in such a way as to show that unconventional military tactics, such as deceptive strategies, result in success. Propertius uses this summary to strengthen the elegy– epic antithesis prevalent in the first five poems of Book 3, aligning unconventional military tactics with “a new path” (nova . . . semita) (3.3.26) toward poetic success in elegy, which Propertius also portrays with deceptive themes

On the relation between phototaxis and photosynthesis in Rhodospirillum Rubrum

    Get PDF
The relation between phototaxis and photosynthesis in Rhodospirillum rubrum has been studied. The light intensity at which saturation is reached in photosynthesis proved to coincide with that at which the contrast sensitivity starts to decrease. Potassium cyanide, which preferably inhibits the Blackman reaction in photosynthesis, decreases the light intensity at which the contrast sensitivity starts to decrease. Ethyl urethan, which preferably affects the energy transfer in photosynthesis, increases this intensity. These data strongly support Manten's hypothesis, according to which phototaxis is based on a sudden decrease of the photosynthetic rate

On the electron-scattering power of protein structures in the spinach chloroplast

    Get PDF
The relative electron-scattering power of chromidia and interchromidia in protein structures of the spinach chloroplast was examined with the aid of the electron microscope. It has been demonstrated that: 1. 1. The technique of Marton and Schiff holds for WO3 crystals and silica films too. 2. 2. The mean electron-scattering constant of the chromidia amounts to about 1.34 times that of the interchromidia in preparations treated with acetone. After lipoid removal with lipase this value is 1.56. This indicates that the constitution of the chromidia is different from that of the interchromidia

How people who self-harm negotiate the inpatient environment: the mental healthcare workers perspective

    Get PDF
Introduction Literature describes self-harm as functional and meaningful. This creates difficulties for service-users detained in an inpatient environment where self-harm is prevented. Aim Mental healthcare staff were interviewed to build on existing evidence of issues with the prevention approach and explore, from a staff perspective, how self-harm prevention impacts on service-users, how they manage distress and how this impacts on staff and their approach to care. Methods Qualitative methods were used to allow unexpected themes to arise. Ten semi-structured interviews were carried out with mental healthcare staff and thematically analysed. Findings and discussion The findings provide new evidence on the benefits and limitations of the inpatient environment for individuals who self-harm. Findings indicate that being unable to self-harm can lead to a continuation of distress and subsequent potentially harmful attempts to manage distress. Staff described experiencing a struggle for control in preventing self-harm, leading to increasingly harmful methods of self-harm. Alternatively some staff were able to support service-users with distress management. We discuss factors influencing which of these ‘paths’ service-users followed. Implications Considerations for care planning including understanding self-harm, using individualized care planning and attending to barriers are outlined with the ultimate aim of reducing distress and the impact of prevention of self-harm

    Non-compact QED(3) coupled to a four-fermi interaction

We present preliminary numerical results for the three dimensional non-compact QED with a weak four-fermion term in the lattice action. Approaches based on Schwinger-Dyson studies, arguments based on thermodynamic inequalities and numerical simulations lead to estimates of the critical number of fermion flavors (below which chiral symmetry is broken) ranging from Nfc=1N_{fc}=1 to Nfc=4N_{fc}=4. The weak four-fermion coupling provides the framework for an improved algorithm, which allows us to simulate the chiral limit of massless fermions and expose delicate effects.Comment: 3 pages, Contribution to Lattice2004(chiral), Fermilab, June 21-26, 200
